Investigating the physical and chemical properties of homeopathic remedies
Many naturopathic therapists work with homeopathic remedies on a daily basis and know from experience how effective they can be. Yet how can such effects be explained scientifically, given that the preparations are so highly diluted that often not a single molecule of the original substance can still be detected?
A research team led by Dr. Steven Cartwright in the UK is investigating this question in the laboratory. They are studying the changes that occur in a solution when it is subjected to repeated vigorous shaking in the homeopathic manner.
How are the measurements taken?
The researchers use highly sensitive dyes that respond to even the slightest changes in their environment. These dyes act as ‘chemical sensors’: they alter their colour or luminescence when the structure of the solution changes. Using special instruments (UV/VIS and fluorescence spectrometers), it is possible to detect whether a shaken solution behaves differently from an untreated one.
First exciting results
Previous experiments have shown that adding just a single drop of a potentised solution to a test solution can significantly alter its internal structure. An ordered zone – known as an exclusion zone – develops, in which water molecules are arranged in a highly structured manner. This zone typically forms on water-attracting (hydrophilic) surfaces. Interestingly, the effect was observed only in shaken solutions, not in untreated ones.
Significance for practice
If such structural changes in water can be confirmed, they may provide an important basis for explaining the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines in physical and chemical terms. This would not only stimulate scientific discussion but also enhance understanding and support prescribing practice in homeopathy.
“An understanding and explanation of the effects of homeopathic medicines would not only revolutionize the status of homeopathy worldwide, but also significantly improve prescribing methods and our ability to treat disease.”
